01.03.14 | Movement Analysis for Animators (1 Day)

This Course Will Cover:

• Character development from a physical stimulus including animal work.
• Movement Fundamentals.
• Space, Structure and Anatomy.
• Organic emotion in character movement.
• Breath and empathy.
• Introduction to Laban Movement Analysis for animation.

Participants on this course will greatly benefit from acquiring a shared language of movement. It will enable acute and precise observation of movement in the world, analysis of the same and the ability to recreate physical patterns with absolute precision, which will aid the creation and direction of character driven work.

On completion of the courses participants will be enabled to:
• Develop a deeper understanding of the body that is fully expressive.
• Understand dramatic tension as expressed through the body.
• Explore the connection between thinking, emotion and physical action.
• Understand movement to enable physical precision in animated character work.
• Understand the relationship between movement and facial expression.
• Explore the relationship between breath, body and gesture.
• Understand the principles of Movement Vocabulary in directing animation.
• Investigate the principles of Laban Movement Analysis.
• Explore Laban’s Motion Factors and Drives.
• Apply Laban’s Efforts to acting, character, culture and body language.

Participant Profile:

This workshop is aimed at individuals who currently work as animators or who are interested in becoming an animator. Participants should be willing to partake in simple practical exercises and should wear loose comfortable clothing.

Tutor Info:

Sue Mythen teaches movement for the BA (Hons) Acting, MFA Directing at The Lir Academy, and MPhil Theatre & Performance, Trinity College Dublin. Her work as Movement Director includes The House, The Plough and the Stars, Major Barbara, 16 Possible Glimpses, The Rivals and Pygmalion at The Abbey, National Theatre of Ireland. Other theatre credits include Elektra, (Canadian Opera Company), winner of three Dora Mavor Moore awards, Semele (RIAM), Dead Man Walking (Opera Ireland), Richard II (Smock Alley), Devotion, Last Call and Jumping on my Shadow (TEAM Theatre Co.) and Coraline (Project). Sue has worked in Italy, Denmark and her work in UK includes Not I, Timon of Athens, Electra, A Devilish Exercise and Chelsea Valentine. Film work includes choreography for Northanger Abbey (iTV/Diplomat films).
