Animation Skillnet with support from Screen Training Ireland are excited to host a one day workshop in Character Design for Animation with Ernie Gilbert.

Course Content:

This workshop will cover a systematic approach to designing for animation, with a focus on developing credible and effective characters. Regardless of project style or project format (2-D or 3-D), the same principles of design and character development apply. Various aspects of character design/development will be covered, including research, shape psychology, asymmetry, personality, rhythm, line-of-action, proportion, silhouette value and solid draftsmanship.

Participant Profile:

The course is aimed at graduates and professionals who want to further their understanding of effective character development and design for 2D and 3D animation.

Tutor Info:

Ernie Gilbert is a graduate of the University of Michigan and The California Institute of the Arts. After receiving a degree in theatre performance from U of M, Ernie moved to Los Angeles to study animation at CalArts, and to make funny cartoon shows. Since then, Ernie has worked as an Animator, Character Designer, Art Director, Design Supervisor, Assistant Director, Storyboard Artist, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Flash Animator, and voice actor. Ernie has received two Emmy Awards from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and two Annie Awards from the International Animated Film Society for his animation design work. Ernie has taught at The Barnsdall Art Institute and at California State University- Northridge, and has held design and drawing workshops at various schools in and around the Burbank/Glendale area,

Ernie’s clients include Nickelodeon Animation, Walt Disney Television, Disney Jr, Cartoon Network, Sony Pictures, Warner Brothers, Ka-Chew, Nick Jr and American Greetings. When he’s not making cartoons, Ernie enjoys writing and directing for the theatre, making music with friends, and spending time with his family (not necessarily in that order).
