Course Content: The course will cover:
  • figure drawing with anatomy
  • gesture, story and intent
  • formulation, shape and volume
  • how anatomy fits into the storytelling process
Participant Profile: This course is aimed at graduates and professionals in animation and related industries who seek to further develop their drawing skills. Participants should have some life drawing experience. Tutor Info: Karl Gnass is is a master figure artist and one of the most sought-after teachers in Los Angeles, whose students include luminaries of the animation and CGI industries. Karl has been teaching drawing, painting, and storyboarding for over 40 years and at Disney for 20 years – as well as Dreamworks, Sony ImageWorks, Nickelodeon, and Warner Bros Features Animation, among others. He also storyboarded for Disney Television Animation, for DarkWing Duck, Gargoyles, and Aladdin Prince of Thieves. In film, he developed the character expressions and anatomical breakdowns for Stuart in Stuart Little, and character breakdowns in Harry Potter. Karl worked with Glen Keane to develop a class to help CGI animators working on ‘Tangled’ to understand the dynamics of movement. He continues at Disney on such films as ‘Moana’ as an Anatomical Dynamics Consultant. Karl is currently on an exclusive Teaching Tour throughout Europe which includes workshops for the Animation Skillnet in Dublin, Ireland; the Animation Centrifuge in Glasgow, Scotland; the Animation Workshop in Viborg, Denmark; the Norlum Studio in Viborg, Denmark; and for the NEMO Academy of Digital Arts in Florence, Italy where Karl will give a workshop at the Odeon Theater. NEMO is also hosting Karl’s first exhibition of his figure drawings at the Gipsoteca Gallery. Date & Times: Tuesday 5th September from 9.30am-5pm.
