Have an original story idea you’re developing? Working on a short or feature length animation or live action script or a TV series? Want to develop an existing IP like a short story, a book or a play into a script or series? 

Over five classes, participants will learn what’s required to properly develop an IP through lectures, workshop sessions and with guidance from visiting industry professionals, all to assist in directing their projects towards a ‘green light’.

Course Content:

PART ONE

From Inspiration to Creation – developing and refining a core idea

The Essential Elements of ‘Story’

Writing powerful Loglines, Synopses, Outlines, & Treatments 

The Screenplay: Proper language and form, Writing strong dialogue, Character: the road map of change, Tones: Comedic or Dramatic, Visual grammar, Genres

PART TWO  

The Development Process:  Story Notes and Script Coverage

Working with Story Consultants, Script Editors, Development Executives and Commissioning Editors 

‘Good in the room’  – Develop strong verbal pitching skills

Developing powerful TV Bibles, Sample Scripts, Pilot scripts in both live action and animation

Creating engaging collateral support pitch material 

Workshop Sessions:  Participants work solo or collaboratively to further develop their ideas, projects and pitches through lectures, group discussions, and with the assistance of visiting industry professionals

Participant profile: 

Aimed at storytellers and screenwriters, development executives, producers, and directors with projects they are developing to attract interest and/or funding from industry competitions, studios, production companies, funding organisations, and broadcasters.

Tutor info: 

Screenwriter/story consultant/script editor John Dawson has written and assisted in developing film and TV series projects in both animation and live action for clients in Ireland, Britain, Canada, and Korea. He’s taught storytelling and screenwriting as well as acting and improvisation for over 21 years in three countries. He’s lectured on screenwriting at Trinity College Dublin and facilitated courses and workshops for Animation Skillnet, Screen Training Ireland, the Galway Film Centre, well as for employees of Ireland’s Academy Award nominated animation companies Brown Bag Films and Cartoon Saloon.

5 Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm-9.30pm; November 12th, November 19th, November 26th, December 3rd and December 10th.
