Animation Skillnet with support from Screen Training Ireland are delighted to host a one day workshop in character performance for animation with Myrna Gawryn.
The globalization of the animation industry has erased borders, crossing culture, orientation and language. Animators, worldwide, are tasked with producing an unprecedented standard of quality, and the ability to captivate and communicate, no matter what the culture or story being told.
Myrna works with animators and directors to develop physical behavior, performance, relationship to other characters, emotional context, and anatomical detail — all the components that make animation truly alive and specific. To this end, Myrna employs principles of movement, anatomy, gender, age, environmental elements, heightened moments (keyframing), creature and object characteristics, emotional condition, choices in expression, transitional movement, shape, weight, locomotion, breath, timing, rhythm and the involvement of text, props and choreography as they relate to animation.
By noticing the details of character, environment and relationship, and exploring and refining the physicality of these details in shot preparation, imagined situations, and team and one-on-one consultation, Myrna works with participants to develop advanced skills for creating truly powerful visual and physical storytelling.
This workshop is aimed at animators, directors, writers, voice performers, story boarders, riggers, previs artists, background artists, and all other crew members interested in creating clear and powerful work as a team.
Myrna’s Gawryn’s background is in dance, choreography, character and physical performance for theater, film and T.V., human behavior and anthropology, anatomy, kinesiology and performance capture.
She has taught and consulted in the area of character behavior and development, visual storytelling and movement for animation at DREAMWORKS and DISNEY, as well as LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY in Los Angeles, LUCASFILMS and CG PROTEGE in SINGAPORE, GOBELINS and ANNECY in France, the GOBELINS INTERNATIONAL MASTER CLASS PROGRAM worldwide, GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY in BRISBANE/AUSTRALIA, The BAROS INTERNATIONAL ANIMATON FESTIVAL in INDONESIA, The MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL in CANADA, MOME in BUDAPEST/HUNGARY, FILMAKADEMIE in STUTTGART/GERMANY, The OUTBACK FILM BOOTCAMP in WINTON/AUSTRALIA, THE NORMAL UNIVERSITY IN TAIPEI/TAIWAN and THE ONE ACADEMY in KUALA LUMPUR/MALAYSIA.
Myrna has been teaching, performing, and studying the movement of all things animate, all her working life. Her experience with the details of action and character driven performance, and her passion for understanding how we move and what moves us, has brought her to her work in animation.
