Animation Skillnet and Screen Skills Ireland are proud to present the new instalment of their 2D Animation Bootcamp, aimed at recent graduates interested in joining the 2D Animation industry.

Details:

Devised in consultation with professionals from various Irish Studios, the Bootcamp will involve an introduction to the stages of a modern 2D Animation Production. Operating a holistic approach, the key aim of this course is to expose the graduate artist to the key aspects of the working environment. 

The aim at the end of the Bootcamp is for participants to be better prepared to obtain work with a studio. 

Due to the current situation linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Bootcamp will take place entirely online and spread over two weeks as follows:

Tuesday 4th of Aug from 7pm to 9pm

2D Animation Industry Overview 

  • Typical department/production structure/pipeline
  • How departments work with each other
  • Details about various roles available in Ireland
  • Case studies

Wednesday 5th of August from 7pm to 9pm 

Showreel & Online portfolio Part I

  • Dos and don’ts
  • Useful platforms and visibility
  • Case studies
  • Homework given

Thursday 6th of August from 7pm to 9pm

Getting into Business 

  • Contracts
  • Invoicing
  • Personal Finance/tax

Tuesday 11th of August from 7pm to 9pm 

Applying to jobs 

  • How to research & read a Job Spec
  • CV writing & layout
  • Cover letters 

Wednesday 12th of August from 7pm to 9pm 

Software presentation

  • What programmes are used by studios in Ireland depending on each role and throughout the pipeline

About the tutors

John Peavoy – John is a lecturer of animation and illustration with the Athlone Institute of Technology. He has previously worked as an animator with Cartoon Saloon on projects such as The Breadwinner and Puffin Rock. He has worked as a supervisor, animator, editor, and animation designer for a wide range of clients such as RTÉ, BBC, Nick JR. Netflix, Amazon, and others from America and across Europe.

Kirsten Shiel – Kirsten Shiel has been working in the animation industry on both 2D and 3D projects for Disney, Nickelodeon, NBC Universal and Netflix as a background artist, a character designer, a concept artist, an art director and now a lead designer at Brown Bag Films Dublin.

She is also an award winning illustrator who has worked for clients like the BBC, Microsoft, Aer Lingus and even John West Tuna!

Michael Downey – Michael is an experienced Talent Acquisition professional with over 5 years experience as a Recruiter in busy operations environments. He currently works for Boulder Media, more specifically recruiting talent for their upcoming feature animation. Michael has extensive experience bringing candidates through hiring processes from start to finish. His industry experience includes Animation, Technology and Cybersecurity.

Kevin Murphy – Kevin has been delivering his “Business 101” series of workshops since 2017, teaching groups of creatives the simple fundamentals of what is required to handle tax, accounting, and contracts in Ireland, so that they can get into business for themselves.

Kevin has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from UCD, is a QQI Certified Trainer, has studied with the Irish Tax Institute towards the Chartered Tax Adviser qualification, and has extensive experience working in accounts and book-keeping roles in various companies. He’s currently finishing an MSc in Business Analysis & Consulting with IESEG School of Management in Paris. He founded RetroNeo Games in 2015, made it Limited in 2016, and finally converted it to a training company in 2018.

Fee:

There is no fee for the Bootcamp but please note that there are only 12 places available.

Graduates from Animation and other related courses who are interested in being considered for a place on the 2D Animation Bootcamps should apply at the link below by Friday 17th of July at 12pm.

Successful applicants will be notified a week before the Bootcamp starts.
