21.02.18 | Pipeline Fundamentals and Python Development (5 Wednesday Evenings)

Course Content:

This course will cover the following:

  • CG Pipeline Fundamentals – The Stages of Production.
  • Asset Management and the Basic Functionality of a Pipeline.
  • The use of Shotgun in VFX.
  • Linux and shell scripting.
  • Introduction to Python – variables, functions, conditionals, loops, etc..
  • PyCharm and other python editors.
  • Source Control, Git and using GitHub.
  • Writing Pythonic Code – PEP8, Dictionaries, Tuples, Generators, Classes and Objects.

By the end of the course participants should have an understanding of how to prepare for and manage all aspects of the pipeline. Along with this they will get a crash course in Python and learn how it is used within the VFX industry. They will have hands on experience with object orientated coding and version control systems such as git.

Participant Profile:

This an introductory level course but participants should have some experience with scripting and an interest in the technical aspects behind CG pipelines. Beginner to intermediate Python developers will also benefit from the topics covered later in the course.

Tutor Info:

Declan McGuire has ten years experience as a Pipeline Technical Director and Lead Lighter at Framestore, Brown Bag Films and currently Boulder Media. Over the years he has developed tools that have been used on shows such as Where the Wild Things Are, Sherlock Holmes, Lincoln, Gravity, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok.
