Animation Skillnet and Screen Skills Ireland are proud to present the new instalment of their 2D Animation Bootcamp, aimed at recent graduates interested in joining the 2D Animation industry. This Bootcamp is supported under the Skills Connect Programme.
Devised in consultation with professionals from various Irish Studios, the Bootcamp will involve an introduction to the stages of a modern 2D Animation Production. Operating a holistic approach, the key aim of this course is to expose the graduate artist to the key aspects of the working environment.
The aim at the end of the Bootcamp is for participants to be better prepared to obtain work with a studio.
Due to the current situation linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Bootcamp will take place entirely online as follows:
Tuesday 10th of August
2D Animation Industry Overview – 10am to 1pm
- Typical department/production structure/pipeline
- How departments work with each other
- Details about various roles available in Ireland
- Case studies
Showreel & Online portfolio – 2pm to 5pm
- Dos and don’ts
- Useful platforms and visibility
- Case studies
Wednesday 11th of August
Applying to jobs – 10am to 1pm
- How to research & read a Job Spec
- CV writing & layout
- Cover letters
Understanding Irish Tax and managing your accounts – 2pm to 4pm
- Revenue online platforms
- Income Tax/PAYE
- Artist Exemption
- Record Keeping
Thursday 12th of August
Software presentation 10am – 1pm
- What programmes are used by studios in Ireland depending on each role and throughout the pipeline
First Steps into the Industry – 2pm to 3pm
- networking events
- how to apply for apprenticeship, traineeship, internship and other programmes
- good resources, tips, etc.
About the tutors
John Peavoy – John is a lecturer of animation and illustration with the Athlone Institute of Technology. He has previously worked as an animator with Cartoon Saloon on projects such as The Breadwinner and Puffin Rock. He has worked as a supervisor, animator, editor, and animation designer for a wide range of clients such as RTÉ, BBC, Nick JR. Netflix, Amazon, and others from America and across Europe.
Gillian Comerford – Gillian has been working in the Animation Industry for 20 years for Boulder Media Animation Studio. She started out as an Animator on shows like “Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends” and “The Amazing World of Gumball” from which she progressed to Supervising Animation Director on “Wander Over Yonder”. From 2016 onwards her career took a turn towards Direction and she has worked on a number of Shorts and Series for the “My Little Pony” franchise. Gillian has reviewed hundreds of portfolios and showreels over this time. She looks forward to helping you make a good first impression to future employers!
Michael Downey – Michael is an experienced Talent Acquisition professional with over 5 years experience as a Recruiter in busy operations environments. He currently works for Boulder Media, more specifically recruiting talent for their upcoming feature animation. Michael has extensive experience bringing candidates through hiring processes from start to finish. His industry experience includes Animation, Technology and Cybersecurity.
Peter Daly – Peter is a qualified Chartered Accountant with over 20 years of experience. He completed his training with PricewaterhouseCoopers and in the years since qualifying, has worked in various private and publicly quoted companies.
In 2015, Peter set up his own accountancy practice, Peter Daly, Chartered Accountants. The practice caters predominantly for individuals – many of whom are working within the Arts, but they also cater for small businesses, including Arts organisations.
Alongside his accountancy work, Peter also works as a writer and actor. He has worked with numerous theatre companies in Ireland including The Abbey, The Gate, Rough Magic, Druid and Fishamble among many others.
System requirements needed for the Bootcamp
Workshops will be taking place using a virtual classroom app. Participants will need to have a good internet connection and a device with Audio, Webcam and Microphone for live chat sessions and feedback.
Cost
There is no fee for the Bootcamp but please note that there are only 12 places available.

Graduates from Animation and other related courses who are interested in being considered for a place on the 2D Animation Bootcamps should apply at the link below by Friday 30th July at 12pm.

Successful applicants will be notified a week before the Bootcamp starts.
