Course Content:

This workshop will offer insight into the ever-evolving animation industry including how mainstream and independent studios work and what are typical expectations from production teams and subcontracting studios. It also offers information for studios interested in developing their own intellectual property, technology and service work – short term, long term and sustainability scenarios.
Topics will include:
  • What I learned from a multi-million dollar theatrical feature fiasco
  • How do you put your dream team together?
  • Designing the optimal environment for creativity and production flow (2D, CG & VR)
  • Current production trends: The impact of Netflix and Amazon
  • Developing IP versus Service Work: Do’s and Don’ts
  • Question and Answer Session

Participant Profile:

This workshop is open to individuals interested in animation – either as the person navigating the ship i.e. the producer who is responsible for starting a project from scratch and delivering it on time and on schedule, or the artist who wants to be ahead of the curve and explore all the key steps involved and how he or she fits in the team.

Tutor Info:

Zahra Dowlatabadi is an Annie Award winning animation producer whose career spans three decades starting at the renowned animation studio, Tokyo Movie Shinsha. Having had first hand experience in boutique independent animation studios as well as multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerates, Dowlatabadi provides unique insight on different scaled production methodologies and deliverables. She co-authored Producing Animation now in its second edition and translated in Chinese and Korean in 2011. As a producer and strategist, Dowlatabadi’s most recent work has been for Warner Bros. Television Animation and NBCUniversal’s Sprout.
